We are magnificent in our differences

I believe that our differences are what makes the world go round.
We are magnificent in our differences.
Do you agree? I believe we are. I believe that our differences are what makes this world such an amazing place. I believe that those differences are what give us the opportunity to grow and develop, not just as individuals but as the human race.
Meeting someone with different beliefs gives us the opportunity to learn new things, to expand our knowledge and thus our horizons. It gives us the opportunity to strengthen our own beliefs, through debate, and also to open ourselves up to new potential.
And yet, all too often in this world, we are scared. Scared that this different way of thinking will destroy the world we know. And in this fear we destroy it anyway.
Are we really in a place where we can only be happy if everyone else shares our views exactly?
I have many friends who have strong opinions about things that I don't agree with. I remain their friend.
I remain their friend because of the common threads between us, the things that unite us. And sometimes their opinions make me sad, sometimes their opinions make me annoyed, sometimes their opinions make me stand up for what I believe in, sometimes their opinions make me shout my own opinion from the rooftop, sometimes their opinions make me argue with them, sometimes their opinions make me want to show them how wrong I think they are.
I study and practice Mindfulness, it is part of my work and part of my life, and one of the things it has taught me is that we all have a basic desire to be right. And this want to be right creates conflict and confrontation across friendships, across communities, across countries and across the world. Conflict and confrontation, on a deadly scale, that is created simply because we all want to be right.
Can you imagine a world where we all just let go of that want? A world where we all accepted that people won’t always agree with us. A world where we simply acknowledged that people think differently and have different opinions to us. A world where we could let that fact be okay.
We don’t want a world where we all think the same way do we? Imagine that world for a second, ponder that for yourself, how would that look?
We are magnificent in our differences and I think it's time we celebrated them instead of crushing them. I think it's time we saw the beauty in each other instead of the beasts. I think it's time we listened, really listened, to the different opinions and views that exist in our world. OUR world. It belongs to ALL of us and we are MAGNIFICENT in our differences.
