Stress and Anxiety Support for a Noisy World (You’re Not Alone)

Does it feel like there’s a particular kind of tiredness that doesn’t show on your face? It sits deeper than that – somewhere behind your ribs, somewhere in your stomach, somewhere in that space where your thoughts never quite switch off.

If you’re reading this and feeling a little tug of recognition… you’re not on your own.

So many people I speak to – clients, friends, colleagues, people I meet at events – tell me how they’re feeling in different ways with different words.

And I want to say this to you right at the start: there is nothing wrong with you. You are not weak.  You are human and overwhelmed – and overwhelmed makes perfect sense.

We’re living in a time where the world seems louder, faster and more uncertain than ever. But in all honesty, it’s not really the state of the world that does the damage. It’s the perceived state of the world. Because you can’t control the news. You can’t control social media. You can’t control everything people say or do. You can’t control the economy, global events, or the unexpected things life throws at us.

But you can control your internal environment. And that’s where everything starts to shift.

Your Mind Isn’t Misbehaving – All It’s Doing Is Overprotecting You

There is something I wish every human being knew: stress and anxiety are not signs of failure. They are signs that your system is trying to protect you.

Inside all of us is a very old part of the brain whose job is beautifully simple: to keep you alive.

It doesn’t care about happiness, balance, or emotional wellbeing. Its only focus is survival – and it works incredibly fast, long before you’ve had a chance to think things through.

There are two main parts involved in this “survival system”:

  1. The Brainstem – often called the “reptilian brain”

This is the most ancient part of the brain, sitting right at the base where the brain meets the spinal cord. It controls all the automatic things your body does without you having to think:

  • breathing
  • heart rate
  • blood pressure
  • digestion
  • sleep cycles
  • automatic reflexes (like sneezing or jumping at a loud noise)

You don’t get a choice in these. You don’t need to remember them. They just happen – because this part of your brain is always quietly keeping you alive in the background.

  • The Limbic System — the emotional “alarm system”

Sitting just above the brainstem is the emotional part of the brain. This includes the amygdala, which is like your built-in security alarm. Its job is to scan for anything that might be a threat – even just a tiny one – and react instantly.

This is the part of the brain that creates:

  • fear
  • anxiety
  • emotional memories
  • instinctive reactions
  • the fight/flight/freeze response

It’s fast, instinctive, and doesn’t wait for permission.

How these two parts work together:

The brainstem keeps your body alive. The limbic system keeps you safe – or at least tries to. Together they form what many therapists call the “downstairs brain” – the part of your mind that reacts automatically, without thinking, to protect you. This downstairs brain reacts first.

Your logical, rational, “upstairs” brain only gets involved afterwards.

That’s why:

  • your heart races before you know why
  • your stomach flips when you get an unexpected message
  • you feel panicked even when you “know” nothing’s actually wrong
  • you react before you’ve had a chance to reflect

Your brain is not being dramatic. It’s being protective – just a little over-protective sometimes, because it can’t tell the difference between a real threat and a modern inconvenience.

Bottom of Form

So, thousands of years ago, if a rustle in the bushes sounded threatening, your brain had to react instantly. There was no time to gently consider your options. No time to reflect, journal, meditate, or “take a breath”. Instant reaction kept you alive.

Fast forward to 2025 and the things that rustle our bushes now look very different!

An unexpected bill. A message that lands badly. A news headline. Your inbox.
A difficult conversation. A memory that still hasn’t settled inside you. A feeling you haven’t quite named yet.

The weight of responsibilities you’ve been carrying far longer than you realised. Your primitive brain doesn’t see these things as “modern irritations”. It sees them as danger.

And so, your body reacts:

Your heart speeds up. Your thoughts race. Your stomach flips. Your chest tightens.
You feel the urge to fix, hide, run or overthink everything.

None of this is your fault. None of this means you’re not coping. None of this means you’re not strong enough or not good enough. It means your system is overstimulated -and genuinely believes it’s keeping you safe.

And the beautiful thing? These old survival systems can learn new ways of responding – gently, slowly, through gentle repetition and support.Top of Form Small, doable shifts that your brain can recognise as safe.

You’re Not Broken – You’re Tired

A kind of tired that sleep alone can’t fix. Maybe you’ve been holding too much for too long. Maybe you’re carrying emotions nobody else knows about. Maybe you’ve been the strong one your whole life. Maybe you’ve been through something difficult or frightening and told yourself, “It’s fine, I’m fine” – even though your body never really believed you.

When people finally land in a space where they feel safe, whether that’s therapy, community, or even a blog like this, they often say: “I didn’t realise how tense I’ve been until it started to ease.”

Your system isn’t the enemy. It’s exhausted. It wants reassurance. It wants support.
It wants permission to soften. And that’s where daily, manageable support makes an enormous difference.

Why I Created The Happiness Club – and Why It Matters Even More Today

This part of the story began long before the world got as noisy as it feels right now. Back when I was having therapy myself, I’d spend an hour with my therapist that felt like oxygen. Clarity, understanding, grounding. And then – off I’d go, back into life, to cope alone for a whole week until the next session.

Nobody around me knew how bad my anxiety was. Nobody knew I was drowning.
Nobody knew I was clawing at the walls emotionally just to make it to the next appointment.

And years later, when I became a therapist myself, I saw my own clients living through the exact same cycle.

The Happiness Club Today – Support for a Loud, Overwhelming World

Over nearly 11 years on (in 2026), the Club is exactly what I hoped it would be – and more. We have:

  • Daily strategies

Every morning, members receive a simple, short, powerful mindset shift or tool. Not a 20-minute routine. Not a big ask. Just a gentle nudge that helps your mind respond differently that day. Then over time – two, three, four months – you find yourself reacting differently. Calmer. More grounded. Less triggered. More yourself again.

  • Courses for anxiety, stress & low mood

Members can work privately through courses created for the real lived experience of anxiety, overwhelm and depressive episodes – without needing to “confess” anything to anyone.

  • Monthly masterclasses & monthly meditations

People told us they wanted connection – so we added it. Live sessions. Recordings in the app. Topics chosen by the members themselves. Real human support in a safe, gentle space.

  • A whole library of resources

Tools you can use anytime, especially when you don’t want to tell anyone you’re struggling.

  • A community that gets it

Not a shouty, performative kind of community but a calm, compassionate one where people feel less alone.

You Can’t Control the World – But You Can Change How You Feel Living In It

I want you to hear this:

You don’t need to become someone who meditates at sunrise. You don’t need to transform your entire life. You don’t need to be “fixed”. You don’t need to wait until you’re falling apart to deserve support. You just need small, daily shifts that help you feel more like yourself again.

Your nervous system responds to gentle guidance, not pressure.

You are the hero of your own story; you’re the one doing the feeling, the learning, the healing. All the right support does is make the journey feel lighter.

If stress and anxiety have been running your life… here’s your invitation to:

Not to start something huge. Not to perform wellness. Not to pretend everything’s fine.

Just… pause. Breathe. Notice how you’re feeling.

And know this:

  • You’re allowed to have support before things reach a breaking point.
  • You’re allowed to feel steadier in a world that feels unsteady.
  • You’re allowed to have a softer, kinder relationship with your own mind.

And if anything in this blog has made you feel even a tiny bit seen, it means the part of you that’s tired is ready for something gentler. The Happiness Club is there when you’re ready. No pressure. No timetable. Just a calm, supportive space waiting for you.

Because you may not be able to change the whole world – but you absolutely can change how you feel living in it.
